What is hosting and why do we need it?
When you have a website designed it needs to be available on the Internet 24/7/365 so that your customers can access it whenever they want to. In order to do this you get hosting companies that store your website files for you on large storage devices called servers - you can think of a server as a very fast, very big computer with a ginormous hard drive. In reality though a server looks nothing at all like your computer at home, the server components are all rack mounted into cabinets. You can see what they look like below, click on the image for a larger view.
When a visitor calls up your site, the server retrieves the relevant files the user user wants to see, executes all the scripts the file tells it to, including pulling relevant info off the database, and then sends the processed data to the visitor's computer which is them displayed in his / her browser.
When a user clicks a button or sends a form, etc., the users browser sends the info to server. The server retrieves the relevant files, processes the data and sends the resulting display back to the user and so on.
As you can see from the photo above, there are many server modules required for all the different websites being hosted at the hosting company. This array of servers is called a data center.
To ensure that your info is always available, the data center runs on a double redundancy system, ie., your website is stores on two different servers so if something happens to the master server or if the data center wants to upgrade your server, the slave server takes over and your website remains online. The master and the slave servers also each run on their own independent power supply for the same reason.
